Cursing in blog posts – do you mind it?

Blogging

When I blog at Dorm Room Biz, I try not to curse too much. Sometimes a ’shit’ or ‘fuck’ will pop into a post such as Do Epic Shit. But it’s usually just once or twice, nothing majorly excessive. However, some people curse all the time in their blog posts and videos. An example of someone who does it, and does it absolutely wonderful job at it, is Naomi of IttyBiz. Naomi drops the f bomb, and just about any other derogatory word or phrase that she wants, and I feel like her readers love it.

What do you think? I’m one who usually curses in everyday life but does not write that way. However, I think I may take the posting in a different direction here and write as I would actually say it. So if the ’shit’, ‘fuck’, ‘ass’ or’bitches’ pops into a post, post title, or comment, please do not be offended. However, if you don’t think it’s a good idea, I’d also love to hear your thoughts on the idea!

Chris, I think this really depends on how the audience feels. I think that what you are doing asking is a major step to make a decision like this. When you say Naomi’s audience “loves it” can you qualify that somehow? It seems like if you are asking you may think it will have a negative effect and if there is no proof that it would be “loved” is it worth it?

I personally don’t think I would care but at the same time, if I was reading the WSJ or the NY Times and it came up I don’t know if I would find the author or the article credible. What do you think?

Dan – thanks for the great comment. I agree if ‘fuck’ popped up in the WSJ a couple times in an article, most people would have an issue with it. A professional publication like that you wouldn’t expect to throw around that kind of language. But your also right in saying I think it could have a negative effect. As with anything I publish, I like to recheck it, double check it again, then leave it and come back to it for a fresh look. I think you’ll find a couple ‘bad’ words start popping into some posts, but nothing to aggressive or offensive.
